Burls are growths on tree trunks, branches or roots that contain beautiful intricate grain patterns. Figured wood is the result of a growth abnormality or from an infection from a bug or fungus. Some words associated with figured wood are curly, flame, bird’s eye, spalted, quilted, fiddleback, and ribbon. All are unique and present very interesting grain patterns.
